Boy Scout Troop

 Russellville, Alabama

Ask the Scoutmaster

Greetings scouts and parents,

Let me introduce myself, I am Assistant Scoutmaster Elliott Gordon, and on behalf of Scoutmaster Chris Burcham and myself, I want to welcome you to Troop 39.  I have been a member of Troop 39 for only a short time but already find myself busy with creating and maintaining the Troop webpage and the creation of the Troop Newsletter.

I am always afraid to let the boys have control. But, as a scoutmaster, I must. For if a boy is to learn the duties and responsibilities of leadership, he must have experience. When a boy accomplishes a task he has initiated, planned, and executed, he feels an exhilaration that is unmatched in a young person’s development. The pride in a father’s eye pales in comparison to the strength and commitment that shines in the heart of a boy who creates something from nothing and can call it his.

Troop 39 has been helping boys become good men for more than 50 years. We teach them typical scout skills like camping and cooking and first aid, but we also teach them how to help their community, how to work with others, and how to become effective leaders. It is no accident we have so many older boys, so many Eagle Scouts. It is confirmation of the methods and traditions handed down for 50 years, but more than that, it is a testimony to the hard work put in by our adult leaders, and more importantly, by our boys.

If there is ever anything that you need or information that you would like, do not hesitate to contact me or Scoutmaster Burcham.  We consider it an honor to have a small part in the developement of your son's character.

Yours In Scouting,

Assistant Scoutmaster Gordon
